Arsenal have been linked with the transfer of French defender William Saliba in the past month and this continues to drag on.
According to latest reports from France, the major stumbling block hampering the transfer is that the French side wants the player on-loan next season.
Saint-Etienne president Bernard Caiazzo has confirmed it this week. Caiazzo revealed to reporters that the player would only be sold to a club that would allow the player return on-loan.
“He will stay at the club this season,” Caiazzo said.
“It is an imperative condition should we come to an agreement for his transfer. It’s also William’s wish.”
Saliba has gained a reputation as one of the best young defenders in the French League. The 18-year old broke into the first team in the 2018/19 season and put up quality performances which has attracted a lot of big clubs.
It is understood that Saint-Etienne are demanding a transfer fee of £26 million for the player. It is highly unlikely that Arsenal would spend such amount of money for a player that would be loaned back to the French club.
It is well publicized that Arsenal has just £45million to spend on transfers. This transfer is looking more unlikely to happen. Saliba made 19 appearances for Saint-Etienne last season.
