Aston Villa mean business this summer as they look to compete strongly in the 2019/20 season.
According to a report from the Daily Echo, the Villans are reportedly keen on signing Southampton defender Jack Stephens this summer.
Although no official contact has been made, it is reported that Villa are hoping to push their luck for another Southampton player.
This is coming after Dean Smith’s side secured the transfer of left-back Matt Targett from the St Mary’s stadium. Villa paid £15m for the full-back and now look set to make Stephens their sixth signing of the summer.
The Villans are short in defence following the departure of Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe who returned to Bournemouth and Manchester United respectively after completion of their loan spells at Villa Park.
Stephens still has three years left on his current contract and that leaves a question mark on whether the Saints can sanction the sale of the defender to a Premier League rival.
The 25-year-old earns £48,000 per week at his current club which would make him one of the top earners at Villa if he makes the move.
Stephens is a versatile defender who can operate centrally in the defence as well as from the right back position. The 25-year-old made 17 Premier League appearances for Southampton last term to help his side avoid relegation last term.
