Reports are rife with the news that current Champions League holders Liverpool are interested in Nicolas Pepe, who would set the club back around £71 million.
The Ivorian burst into the scene with is displays in Ligue 1 this season which saw him score a whooping 22 goals in 39 appearances for the French outfit.
The 24-year-old’s exploits has drawn the attention of some managers including Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp.
Manchester United and Arsenal have also shown strong interest in the player that was wallowing in the doldrums of French fifth tier couple of years ago. However, his experience in the lower division has made the youngster an European hot cake especially to English clubs.
It is believed that the player can no longer be kept by Lille beyond this summer and this has been confirmed by Lille manager Christophe Galtier who believes that Pepe is going to exit the club. It was reported that the coach concurs that ‘Nicolas Pepe will leave. Life’s like that, football’s like that today.’
It is under the gaffer that Pepe has really stepped up netting 37 times in 79 appearances for the club since joining from Angers another French outfit two years ago.
Liverpool’s interest stems from the imminent departure of Daniel Sturridge whose contract would expire next month. So there is the need to fill the void that would be left by the smart English striker.
The sum is a little on the exorbitant side and so might sting Liverpool a bit considering how much was invested in the team a season and a half ago.
