Manchester United have prioritised the signing of Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans as the replacement of French ace Paul Pogba.
Pogba has been linked with an exit from United and hinted in a recent interview that he needs a new challenge. Juventus and Real Madrid have begun talks with the player over a possible move.
United meanwhile have begun talks with Tielemans over a potential transfer with transfer guru Duncan Castles claiming the player has been informed that he is their key target.
Speaking during a transfer podcast Castles revealed that Tielemans is the first option to replace Pogba and United have begun negotiations with Monaco.
“They have had conversations with the agent of Youri Tielemans. He’s currently at Leicester City on loan but owned by AS Monaco,” he said on The Transfer Window podcast.
“I believe Tielemans has been told that he is first option to replace Pogba should he leave.
“I’m not sure he’s entirely convinced that he is indeed first option, but Manchester United have told him that.
United will have to battle Leicester for the signature if the 22-year-old midfielder. Tielemans spent the second half of the season at Leicester and greatly impressed his employers.
He forged a formidable partnership with Jamie Vardy, netting three goals and providing 5 assists in just 13 matches.
Monaco are holding out for a transfer fee of £40 million for the Belgium international which is not a problem for United. The young midfielder will be an excellent signing for United and showed that he could cope with the intensity of the Premier League.
However it remains to be seen whether he is convinced that a move to Manchester United is the right one at this stage of his career.
