The signing of Antoine Griezmann by Barcelona this summer has edged Brazillian ace Philippe Coutinho towards an exit from the club. However, the former Liverpool midfielder would be welcomed back to the club according to club legend Steve Nicol.
Speaking on an ESPN soccer podcast Nicol believes that the club are lacking something extra that Coutinho could bring to the team. According to him the Brazilian playmaker is versatile and can play as part of the front three or in the hole behind the front three.
“Philippe Coutinho could play where he played when he left which is part of the front three but he also did a stint in the middle three as well,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“He’s already shown in the Premier League that he can work on both these positions. What you’re trying to do constantly is bring in players that not only make your squad better but make everybody in your starting eleven better.
“Of course, to have the quality of him, he’s now pushing somebody like [Sadio] Mane or [Mohamed] Salah on the other side.
“You’re just talking about making Liverpool better. That’s what’s going to be Liverpool’s problem. How do they make the squad, first of all, but even the starting eleven even better?
Coutinho was seen back then as the best player at the club before making the big move to Barcelona. However, it has not worked out for the 27-year-old who is expected to leave the club this summer.
It is understood that Liverpool are open to a transfer for the midfielder but are unwilling to pay more than £70 million for his transfer.
Coutinho regularly showed in the Premier League that he was capable of producing consistent performances for the Reds and would be a plus to the team.
Last season, the club depended solely on their front three for goals and lacked creativity from the midfield when teams sat deep against them.
It is not far-fetched that a transfer could materialise in the coming days and we would be watching this news with great interest.
